Psycholinguistics is not hard because the ideas are difficult. It is hard because there are a lot of names, a lot of terms, and a lot of very similar-sounding distinctions to keep apart.

So every topic here gives you:

Exam alert

What this paper actually rewards. Because the material is descriptive rather than mathematical, the exam leans on three things:

  1. Definitions — "Define X" or "X refers to ___".
  2. Attribution — which researcher proposed which idea.
  3. Distinctions — telling apart two things that sound alike.

Almost every mark in the objective section comes from one of those three. This guide is weighted accordingly.

A note on topic numbers

Your handouts number the topics in the body of the text, but that numbering drifts from the LMS list by one or two in places (the handouts also repeat "143" and "166" by mistake). I have followed the handout's own numbers where they are printed, and grouped everything by theme so you can find things by title rather than by number. If a number looks off by one against your LMS, trust the title.

Core terms — learn these first

/acquisition vs learning/
Acquisition is picking a language up naturally and unconsciously (how a baby gets its mother tongue). Learning is studying it consciously, with rules and effort. This distinction runs through the entire course.
/competence vs performance/
Competence is your underlying, hidden knowledge of a system — you cannot see it. Performance is the observable doing of it: speaking, writing, singing. You can have competence you fail to show in performance (nerves, tiredness, a slip of the tongue).
/comprehension vs production/
Comprehension is understanding (listening, reading). Production is making language (speaking, writing). Warning: the handouts stress that comprehension is NOT the same as competence — comprehension is a form of performance too. This exact confusion is called out as 'a myth' in the text, so it is very likely to be tested.
/nativist vs behaviourist/
Nativists (Chomsky) say the child is born with language knowledge. Behaviourists (Skinner) say language is learned by habit, imitation and reinforcement. Almost every debate in this course is a version of this argument.
/innate/
Present from birth; not learned. When you see 'innate' in this course, mentally add 'Chomsky would approve'.
/metalinguistic awareness/
Being able to think about language as an object — knowing that the word 'cat' is arbitrary and has no furry connection to the animal.
/arbitrary/
There is no natural reason a particular sound means a particular thing. There is nothing dog-like about the sounds in 'dog'. (The one exception is onomatopoeia — words like 'buzz' that imitate sounds.)
/lateralization/
The way particular jobs get assigned to one side of the brain. For most people, language sits in the left hemisphere.
/aphasia/
A language disorder caused by brain damage — usually to the left hemisphere, usually from a stroke.
/codability/
How short and easy it is to say something in your language. If your language has one word for it, it is highly codable; if you need a whole phrase, it is less codable.

Who's who — the names that carry the marks

The nativist. Language is innate; children are born with Universal Grammar and a LAD. Proposed parameter setting. Attacked Skinner's behaviourism in 1959. Also a discontinuity theorist on evolution.

If a question begins 'Who proposed…' or 'According to…', the answer is almost always one of the fifteen names above. Read this list twice.

Quick check

Which pair correctly matches the theorist to the idea?

Bickerton — the language bioprogram. Universal Grammar is Chomsky, linguistic relativity is Whorf, operating principles are Slobin. Mixing up name-to-idea pairings is the single easiest way to lose marks in this paper.

Comprehension is best described as:

A form of performance. The handouts specifically call it 'a myth' that comprehension equals competence. Production is just more visible — that does not make comprehension into competence.

Bilingualism means using two languages. The course asks two questions about it: how do children end up bilingual, and what does it do to their minds — help, harm, or neither?

Short answer: the old belief that it harms children was based on badly-run studies. Modern evidence says it helps, especially with attention and control.

Contexts of childhood bilingualism (topic 121)

The handouts stress that the meaning of bilingualism varies enormously from situation to situation. People become bilingual because:

  • They live in a bilingual region
  • Their home language differs from their school or business language
  • Colonisation imposed another language
  • They studied a language at school
  • They grew up in a home with two languages
The central distinction — learn this exactly
Simultaneous bilingualism

The child acquires two languages at the same time, usually from birth, typically because they are born into a bilingual community where bilingualism is simply expected.

Sequential bilingualism

A person (child or adult) acquires a second language after already acquiring a native language.

⭐ This is also called second-language acquisition.

Exam alert

Sequential bilingualism = second-language acquisition. That equivalence is stated explicitly in the handouts and makes an easy fill-in-the-blank or matching question.

Bilingual first-language acquisition (topic 122)

In plain words

Popular beliefs about bilingual children are contradictory, and the handouts say so directly:

  • Some people think young children pick up two languages effortlessly.
  • Other parents and teachers fear it will slow development or make children mix and confuse their languages.

Both cannot be right. The research tries to settle it.

Much of what we know comes from early case studies based on diaries kept by parents. The handouts list two concerns with this method:

Second language acquisition in children (topic 123)

Gass and Selinker (2001) note the boundaries of child second-language acquisition are somewhat arbitrary:

Cognitive consequences of bilingualism (topics 124–126)

Metalinguistic awareness (124)

A bilingual child learns that cat and el gato refer to the same animal — so they may better grasp that language is arbitrary.

Two quotations worth remembering
Leopold: the most striking effect of bilingualism was a noticeable looseness of the link between the phonetic word and its meaning. Vygotsky (1934/1986): a bilingual child comes to see their language as one particular system among many, leading to awareness of their own linguistic operations.

More broadly: bilingual children may be generally more attentive to language than monolingual children.

Cognitive control (125)

The ability to selectively attend to some stimuli and ignore others. Also called executive control.
The Bialystok Simon-task study — build the answer
  • Step 1 — Name the researchers and the year

    Start any answer on this topic by naming them. Marks are given for attribution.

  • Step 2 — Name the task and what it measures

    The Simon task tests whether you can ignore irrelevant spatial information.

  • Step 3 — Describe the method

    Coloured stimuli appear on the left or right of a screen; each colour maps to a response key, also on one side.

    Everyone is faster on congruent trials. The gap between the two is called the Simon effect.

    This is the point of the whole study.

    Bilingualism → smaller Simon effects in middle-aged and older adults

    Finish with why it happens. This is the analytical mark.

    Using two languages means constantly suppressing one word in favour of another,
    which trains cognitive control mechanisms.

The old view vs what was wrong with it
Once accepted: bilingualism harms

Otto Jespersen: mastering two languages 'certainly diminishes the child's power of learning other things'.

Many early psychologists concluded bilingualism damaged intellectual development and school performance.

Hakuta's critique — the flaws
  • Failed to control for socioeconomic status — bilingual children usually came from poor backgrounds, so poverty, not bilingualism, may explain the results.
  • Did not check that the 'bilinguals' were truly fluent in both languages.
  • Some studies 'assessed' bilingualism through family names.
Exam alert

The family-names detail is exactly the sort of small, memorable absurdity VU turns into a question. Remember it.

Practice questions

When children acquire two languages at the same time, this is called:

Simultaneous bilingualism. Sequential is when the second language comes after the first is established.

Sequential bilingualism is also referred to as:

Second-language acquisition. The handouts state this equivalence directly — an easy mark if you have read it.

The Simon task, used by Bialystok et al. (2004), assesses:

Ignoring irrelevant spatial information. It is a test of cognitive/executive control, not of language knowledge itself — which is what makes the bilingual advantage interesting.

According to Hakuta, early studies showing bilingualism caused cognitive impairment were flawed mainly because they:

Failed to control for socioeconomic status. The bilingual children were usually poor, so poverty was likely the real cause of the differences found.

Child second-language acquisition is generally taken to extend from about:

5 to 9 years — after the primary language is essentially acquired, but before any possible critical-period effects.

What does a child actually need in order to learn a language? The course answers this by splitting the causes into three groups — environment, cognition, and innate factors — and then examining each in turn.

Necessary vs sufficient conditions (topic 127)

A distinction the exam likes
Necessary condition

One that must be present for language to develop normally.

Sufficient condition

One that, if present, guarantees language will develop normally.

The handouts' key point: it is rare for a complex behaviour to have a single sufficient condition. Most behaviours have multiple causes and several necessary conditions, none sufficient alone.

The three classes of variables
1. Environmental  — what the child hears and experiences 2. Cognitive       — the thinking equipment the child brings 3. Innate          — what is built in from birth All three are needed. A successful theory explains how they interact.

Feral and isolated children (topic 128)

/feral children/
Children who have grown up in the wild, without human contact. They are used to test whether social/linguistic input is a necessary condition for language.
The case of Victor — the Wild Boy of Aveyron
  • Step 1 — The discovery

    Peasants spotted a naked boy running through the woods searching for potatoes and nuts; hunters captured him.

    France, 1797. Named after Aveyron, the province where he was found.
  • Step 2 — Who studied him

    Named the boy Victor and worked with him intensively.

    Jean-Marc-Gaspard Itard, a young physician
    (the case was described and analysed by Lane)
  • Step 3 — Victor's condition at capture

    Other physicians thought him deaf and retarded; Itard disagreed and was optimistic.

    About 12 or 13 years old, no speech, but normal hearing
  • Step 4 — The training

    Itard used techniques resembling modern language training and behaviour modification — e.g. presenting milk and then the French word for it.

  • Step 5 — The outcome

    This is the crucial part for the exam. Victor could name objects presented to him but would not request them using their names — and he developed a gestural system that interfered with language.

The Critical Period Hypothesis (topics 129–130)

/Critical Period Hypothesis (CPH)/
The claim that there is a period early in life during which we are especially prepared to acquire a language. Supporters propose neurological changes in the brain that leave a learner less able afterwards — changes usually assumed to occur near puberty.
Exam alert

Note the hedge the handouts use: the nature of these supposed neurological changes is not well understood, and despite much discussion there have been few empirical studies testing the hypothesis. Examiners like that critical framing.

The landmark study

Johnson & Newport (1989)
Participants: native speakers of Korean and Chinese who had immigrated to the United States Age at arrival: ranged from 3 to 39 years Control: earlier and later arrivals had been in the US for about the same amount of time on average; native speakers included for comparison

Critical period effects in L2 learning (130) — the honest verdict

The handouts are careful here, and you should be too:

  • The evidence has not provided unequivocal support for the CPH.
  • The best we can say: young children generally learn L2 better than older children and adults, at least in the long run.
  • The younger learners' advantage may be due to biological changes, environmental factors, cognitive changes, or some combination.
Memory trick

If a question asks you to evaluate the critical period hypothesis, the safe high-scoring answer is: the pattern is real but the explanation is unsettled. Do not claim the CPH is proven.

Motherese (topics 131–132)

Adult-to-child language. The special way adults speak to young children, which differs in a number of ways from adult-to-adult language.
Characteristics of adult speech to children
Compared with adult-directed speech, speech to children is:   • Shorter   • More concrete   • More directive   • More intonationally exaggerated
Common mistake

Do not assume motherese causes language development. The handouts make two sceptical points that are prime exam material:

  • Some of these properties also appear when adults speak to dogs and even to plants — and the effect on dogs and plants 'is not known'.
  • Data on whether motherese actually assists acquisition is relatively scarce, and widely different opinions exist.

Practice questions

A condition that must be present for language to develop normally is called a:

Necessary condition. A sufficient condition would guarantee the outcome — and the handouts note complex behaviours rarely have one.

Victor, the Wild Boy of Aveyron, was worked with by:

Itard. Lane described and analysed the case; Itard was the physician who did five years of training with him.

Johnson and Newport (1989) studied native speakers of:

Korean and Chinese immigrants to the United States, arriving between ages 3 and 39. This is the landmark critical-period study.

Adult-to-child language is known as:

Motherese. Telegraphic speech is what children (and Broca's aphasics) produce; jargon is a Wernicke's aphasia symptom.

Compared to adult-directed speech, motherese is generally:

Shorter, more concrete, more directive and more intonationally exaggerated — those four adjectives are worth memorising as a set.
04 Cognitive factors in acquisition High yieldTopics 133–137
In plain words

Parents provide good language lessons — but a lesson only works if the learner has the equipment to use it. This section is about the thinking equipment children bring to the job.

The handouts' own analogy
Imagine a philosophy course. The instructor is well prepared, lectures well, and is available when students have problems. None of that guarantees learning — because the course requires students to think abstractly and write analytical essays. A student lacking those skills will struggle anyway. Same for the child: a structured environment helps only if the child has the ability to take advantage of the structure.

Operating principles (topic 134)

Slobin's term for children's preferred ways of taking in (or operating on) information.

Evidence for them: children in virtually all languages use fixed word order to create meanings — even in languages whose word order is actually quite free.

Common mistake

The circularity objection — know this criticism. The evidence for operating principles comes from children's language patterns, and then the principles are used to explain those same patterns. That is circular reasoning.

Independent evidence would help — ideally from cognitive domains other than language — but as written the principles are fairly specific to language. Slobin himself is noncommittal on whether they are language-specific (modular) or general cognitive processes.

Sensorimotor schemata (topic 135)

/sensorimotor period/
Piaget's name for the first 2 years of life, so called because the schemata the child uses to organise experience relate directly to taking in sensory information and acting on it. Examples of sensorimotor schemata: banging, sucking, throwing.
/object permanence/
The understanding that objects continue to exist even when they cannot be perceived. It is the major development at the end of the sensorimotor period. Once acquired, the child is no longer at the mercy of immediate stimuli.
The prediction this makes about child language
  • Step 1 — State the developmental fact

    Object permanence arrives near the end of the sensorimotor period, around age 2.

    Before it: the child can only respond to what is present
    After it: the child can respond to absent things
  • Step 2 — Derive the prediction

    A child who has not yet got object permanence should talk only about what is in front of them.

    Prediction: very young infants should use words referring to
    concrete objects in the immediate environment, especially
    ones they can easily manipulate
  • Step 3 — Check it against the evidence

    The handouts confirm this.

    ✔ Early child language consists of a large number of

  • Step 4 — Add the complication that earns the top mark

    Do not stop at confirmation. The studies of sensorimotor schemata found something more subtle.

    Cognitive processes do NOT emerge prior to language —
    they emerge simultaneously with language.

Cognitive constraints on word learning (topics 136–137)

In plain words

When someone points at a dog and says 'dog', the word could logically mean the tail, the colour brown, the animal, that particular dog, or the act of wagging. Children do not test every possibility — they would never learn fast enough.

So they must come equipped with expectations that narrow the options. These are called cognitive constraints or biases. There are three, all associated with Ellen Markman.

/whole object bias/
When children meet a new label, they attach it to the entire object rather than to a part. Shown a truck and told 'truck', the child assumes it means the whole vehicle — not the tyres, doors or colour. Markman found this holds even when colour or dynamic activity is made salient.

The handouts link this to three infant constraints on physical bodies: objects move as wholes, objects move independently of each other, and objects move on connected paths.

/taxonomic bias/
Children assume an object label names a taxonomic category — a kind of thing — rather than one individual. So 'dog' means dogs in general, not just Fido.
Markman's taxonomic experiment
Normally, children categorise by thematic relations:   milk → cow  |  spoon → soup  |  car → stop sign The test: two- and three-year-olds saw two basic-level objects (two different kinds of dog) plus a thematically related object (dog food). Without a label: children chose the dog + dog food (thematic) With an unfamiliar label: children chose the two dogs (taxonomic) ⭐ A new word makes children shift from thematic to taxonomic thinking.
/mutual exclusivity bias/
A child who knows the name of an object will generally reject applying a second name to it. One object, one label.
Markman & Wachtel's experiments
Study 1: 3-year-olds saw pairs of objects — one familiar (banana, toy cow, spoon), one unfamiliar (lemon wedge press, tongs). A puppet asked them to 'Show me the x' (a nonsense syllable). → Children were much more likely to select the novel object. Study 2: children were given a novel label for an object they already had a name for — e.g. 'claw' for a hammer. → Children interpreted the new term as applying to only one part    of the object.

Impairments of language and cognition (topic 137)

Down syndrome generally supports a close language–cognition relationship: language delays tend to be proportionate to the severity of the cognitive disability.

But in certain individuals there are dissociations — significant discrepancies between the level of cognitive functioning and the level of linguistic functioning:

Dissociations run both ways
Strong cognition, weak language

The child thinks well but their language lags badly behind.

Strong language, weak cognition

The child produces fluent, complex language despite poor general cognition.

Exam alert

These dissociations are the evidence used against the claim that language is simply a by-product of general intelligence. If the two can come apart, they cannot be the same thing.

Practice questions

Operating principles were proposed by:

Slobin. Piaget gave us sensorimotor schemata; Markman gave us the word-learning biases; Bickerton gave us the bioprogram.

The main criticism of operating principles is that they are:

Circularity. The principles are inferred from children's language patterns, then used to explain those same patterns.

Object permanence is acquired at the end of which Piagetian period?

Sensorimotor — roughly the first two years of life.

A child shown a truck and told 'truck' assumes the word refers to the whole vehicle rather than the tyres. This is:

Whole object bias. Taxonomic bias is about the label naming a category; mutual exclusivity is about refusing a second name for the same thing.

A child who knows an object's name generally refuses to accept a second name for it. This is called:

Mutual exclusivity bias, demonstrated by Markman and Wachtel.

Studies of sensorimotor schemata suggest that cognitive processes:

The language bioprogram hypothesis (topics 138–141)

Bickerton's claim that children have an innate grammar available biologically if the language input around them is insufficient. The handouts' own phrase: 'something like a linguistic backup system'.
Pidgin vs creole — get this exactly right
Pidgin

Bickerton's definition: 'an auxiliary language that arises when speakers of several mutually unintelligible languages are in close contact'.

Typically arises when workers from diverse countries are brought in as cheap labour. They learn a simpler form of the dominant language — just enough to get by.

Spoken by the immigrant adults. Structurally impoverished.

Creole

What happens when the children of those immigrants acquire a pidgin as their native language.

Because access to native speakers is limited, the children receive the impoverished pidgin as their primary input — yet what comes out is far more sophisticated.

Spoken by the next generation. Structurally rich.

Bickerton's Hawaiian argument — build the answer
  • Step 1 — Set the historical scene

    The conditions for creoles existed repeatedly between 1500 and 1900, when European nations built labour-intensive agricultural economies on isolated, underpopulated tropical islands.

    Hawaii: contact with Europeans from the 18th century, but the key
    event was the 1876 revision of US tariff laws, bringing a large
    influx of indentured workers to harvest sugar.

Parameter setting (topic 142)

A framework within generative linguistics in which a language's syntax is described using general principles (abstract rules) plus specific parameters (markers or switches) that are turned on or off for particular languages.

The handouts frame the bioprogram as a specific instance of a general innate mechanism called parameter setting. Parameters play a key role in Universal Grammar (Chomsky, 1981).

How parameter setting works
Grammar is defined as a set of parameters, one for each subsystem of the language. Each parameter has a finite (usually small) number of possible settings. Different combinations of settings then yield all the languages of the world. According to Chomsky (1981), children are born knowing the parameters and their possible settings. So acquiring a language is reduced to identifying which settings apply to your own native language. Example: the head parameter (discussed by Cook, 1988) — it determines the position of heads in phrases.
Memory trick

Think of parameters as a set of switches on a machine you were born with. You are not building the machine — you are just flipping the switches to match the language you hear around you. That analogy will get you through any parameter question.

They agree the creole phenomena are interesting and show a robust drive to communicate — but argue this does not require a preformationist scenario (grammar emerging because it was innately specified).

Their line: if children have a robust drive plus processing tools, the rest 'may simply follow because it is the natural solution'.

Jackendoff's reply

Adults also have a robust drive to acquire language — yet adults acquire pidgins, not creoles.

So something beyond a robust drive is needed. According to Jackendoff and others, that something is an innate mechanism.

Exam alert

The adults-get-pidgins-children-get-creoles reply is the single most quotable line in this whole section. If you can deploy it, you have shown you understand the debate rather than just listing positions.

In plain words

When part of the brain is damaged — usually by a stroke — language breaks down. Which part is damaged determines how it breaks down. That fact is the foundation of the whole field.

Two main patterns: one where speech comes out broken but meaning is largely intact, and one where speech flows beautifully but means nothing.

Broca's aphasia (topic 145)

Experimental studies of aphasia (topic 149)

The implicit assumption: Broca's patients have an intact underlying language representation — they conceptualise sentences normally but cannot translate them into speech.

Why it was questioned
  • Many comprehension tests were extremely global and did not separate syntactic from semantic processes.
  • Comprehension deficits are easier to disguise than production deficits.

Caramazza and Zurif (1976) tested Broca's, Wernicke's and conduction aphasics: patients heard a sentence and chose which of two pictures matched it.

Implications for normal language processing (topic 150)

A major distinction in normal processing is comprehension vs production. If that is not merely conceptual but biologically based, we should find cases where one is impaired and the other spared. The initial descriptions of Broca's and Wernicke's aphasia support this — the handouts say the comprehension–production distinction appears beyond dispute.

One thing seems clear: spoken language developed quite recently in our evolutionary history.

The crucial anatomical development
When we speak, air is expelled from the lungs through the vocal tract. We shape the tract by moving lips, jaw, tongue and larynx. The key change: enlargement of the PHARYNGEAL area — the region above the larynx and just below the mouth. Newborn humans and adult chimpanzees:   the larynx exits directly into the mouth Adult humans:   the larynx exits into the pharynx This anatomical difference greatly influences the number of sounds that can be produced — newborns and chimpanzees are physically incapable of producing the full range.

Brain size & the social cognition hypothesis (topic 162)

The three notions in Whorf's famous quotation
From Whorf's most-quoted passage (Carroll, 1956, pp. 213–214), the handouts extract three ideas: 1. Languages 'carve up' reality in different ways 2. These differences are covert or unconscious — we are not     consciously aware of how we classify objects 3. These differences influence our worldview He also stresses the agreement is implicit and unstated, but its terms are 'ABSOLUTELY OBLIGATORY' — we cannot talk at all without subscribing to it. The handouts' own caveat: these are profound ideas, but not easily amenable to experimental test.

Whorf's examples (topics 165–166)

They divide into lexical and grammatical. Whorf was more interested in the grammatical ones.

Lexical examples

/differentiation/
The number of words in a given domain (colours, birds, fruits…) in a lexicon. A more highly differentiated domain has more words, expressing finer distinctions.

Whorf's argument: all languages are highly differentiated in some domains and poorly in others, and greater differentiation relates to culturally significant concepts.

The snow example
English has one word covering falling snow, snow on the ground, snow packed hard like ice, slushy snow, wind-driven flying snow. Whorf argued that to an Inuit speaker this all-inclusive word would be 'almost unthinkable' — these are sensuously and operationally different things to contend with, and get different words. The 'empty' drums example: Whorf argued we are careless around petrol drums labelled 'empty' because of the word. Note his emphasis on 'regular' analogy — a habitual interpretation built up slowly over time, seeping into our mental framework. Important nuance: Whorf did not say we cannot avoid this pattern of thought — obviously he did. It is just a different, more active pattern of thought.

Grammatical examples

Three grammatical cases from the handouts
1. English nouns vs verbs. We treat the noun/verb split as    fundamental: nouns = long-lasting, stable (horse, man);    verbs = short-lived actions (hit, run).    Whorf's challenge: why then are temporary events like    lightning and spark nouns? And why are dwell, persist,    continue verbs? In Hopi, lightning is treated differently. 2. Wintu evidentials. One inflection attaches to the verb if there    is direct visual evidence, another if it is gossip, another if it    is a regular event (Lee, 1944/1987).    As Brown (1958) puts it, Wintu speakers must have    'a continuing grasp of the evidence' of their assertions. 3. Navaho riding. 'I was riding a horse' cannot be directly    translated. In English it patterns like 'I was pounding a nail' —    I am the actor, the nail is the object.    In Navaho, the action of riding is SHARED between rider and    horse.

How to design a Whorf test — the three definitions needed
  • Step 1 — Define 'differences in language'

    Two approaches. The first is the one most studies use.

    (a) Compare a language that linguistically marks a conceptual
    distinction with one that does not — presence vs absence of
    explicit marking.

    (b) Compare two languages that mark the same distinction in
    different ways.
  • Step 2 — Define 'differences in thinking'

    Obviously difficult — you cannot directly measure a worldview.

    Whorf was interested in habitual thought.
    Lucy (1992b): habitual thought = 'routine ways of attending to
    objects and events, categorizing them, remembering them, and
    perhaps even reflecting upon them'.
  • Step 3 — Distinguish it from the other kind

    The contrast term matters.

    Specialized thought = cognitive routines restricted to certain
    subgroups within a culture.

The colour domain is the one that supports Whorf — but only the weak version of linguistic relativity. The spatial domain gives you the interactionist compromise. Those two verdicts are the most examinable conclusions in this whole block.

Criticisms & final observations (topics 167, 186)

The four problems with the hypothesis
1. The strong version is untestable. Support has been weak because    it is virtually impossible to test one's worldview without using    language. Support for the weaker version has been minimal. 2. Nobody can agree what it says. Penn (1972) notes it is stated    'more and less strongly in different places' in Sapir's and Whorf's    writings — sometimes strong, sometimes weak.    ⭐ Alford (1980): neither Sapir nor Whorf ever named their ideas    the 'Sapir–Whorf Hypothesis'. The name appeared only after their    deaths. 3. It requires measuring thought. Measuring thought and worldview is    nearly impossible without the confounding influence of language.    Researchers settle for studying behaviour as a link to thought. 4. The chicken-and-egg problem. If strong determinism is true, thought    is impossible without language. But then: what about the    pre-linguistic thought of babies? How could babies acquire    language without thought? And where did language come from, if    there was no thought before it?

The shared Sapir–Whorf position: both agreed it is our culture that determines our language, which in turn determines how we categorize our thoughts about the world.

Four increasingly ambitious claims about what language does to thought — and the handouts systematically demolish all four, then offer a fifth position as the correct one.

The pattern is always the same: state the theory → name what its proponents claim → list the inadequacies. Learn the shape and you can answer any version of the question.

Theory 1: Speech is essential for thought (topic 169)

The claim: we must learn how to speak aloud, otherwise we cannot develop thinking.

What proponents say
(a) Thought is a kind of behaviour — speech — originating from     speech production (verbal or non-verbal) (b) Thought develops as a kind of speech: by speaking aloud you begin     to speak subvocally / make internal articulations Thought is defined as subvocal speech or behaviour.
🔴 The SIX inadequacies
1. Children with no speech production can comprehend and think.    e.g. hearing persons born mute. If you can comprehend meaning,    you must be able to think. 2. Comprehension develops BEFORE production. Comprehension precedes    and is the basis for production. Children at the one-word stage    can already understand multi-word syntactic structures. 3. Speaking aloud while thinking something different — the wandering    mind. Two processes at once. 4. Telling a lie. Saying one thing while thinking another proves two    distinct processes with different content run simultaneously. 5. Meaning and thought occur without behaviour. People do not lose    word meanings when body parts are lost. A paralysed person can    still think clearly — so thought does not depend on movements    of the speech organs. 6. Interpreting between languages can be done. Simultaneous    interpreters understand in one language and speak in another,    which requires a system of abstract thought mediating between    languages. ⟹ Speech production is NOT necessary for thought.

Theory 2: Language is essential for thought (topic 170)

The claim: we must learn language — how to produce or understand speech — otherwise we cannot develop thinking.

🔴 The THREE inadequacies
1. Deaf persons without language can think. Deaf children at play    and at home behave as intelligently and rationally as hearing    children. If language were the basis of thought, they would be    'merely robots'. 2. Multilinguals are whole persons. The theory predicts someone    knowing 3 languages would have 3 systems of thought — and so    could not think coherently, or would have separate personalities.    Not true: multilingual and monolingual children in the same    environment show no difference in beliefs, values, personality    or perceptions of the world. 3. Intelligent animal behaviour occurs without language.    (a) Monkeys develop simple counting and arithmetic abilities    (b) Insects devise strategies for gathering food, defending       themselves and finding mates    Since animals think without language, there is no reason humans    cannot do the same.

Theory 3: Language shapes our perception of nature (topic 171)

The claim: learning a language determines or influences how we perceive the physical world — visually, auditorily and so on.

Proponent's position: one's knowledge of vocabulary or syntax influences one's perception and understanding of nature.

🔴 The SIX inadequacies
1. Perception, interest and need determine vocabulary — not the    other way round. Children worldwide are enchanted by dinosaurs:    they perceive the types → develop interest → then feel the    need to seek the names. 2. Colour and snow vocabulary.    Colour: speakers with a limited colour vocabulary were no    different at distinguishing rainbow colours from speakers with a    broad one.    Snow: Hawaiians have one word; Inuits have many. But    English-speaking skiers in cold countries create phrases —    'powder snow', 'wet snow'. It is importance in their lives that    drives the vocabulary. Phrase-making makes up for any    vocabulary deficiency. 3. Hopi 'time' and Chinese 'counterfactuals'.    Hopi: they use periods relating to harvest, moon, sun and other    events — but English does much the same ('when it gets dark',    'when the weather gets warm'). People differ because of    experiences, not language.    Chinese: the claim that Chinese speakers could not think    hypothetically arose from FAULTY TRANSLATIONS. Once proper    translations were made, no difference in thinking remained. 4. Lack of vocabulary does not indicate lack of concept. English has    'palm' for the underside of the hand but no single word for the    topside — we say 'back of the hand'. The concept is clearly there. 5. Knowledge overrides literal word meanings. The word 'sunset'    implies the sun sets on its own. We all know it is the earth that    moves. Continual use of a language form does not change the    underlying thought. 6. Multilingual's view of nature. A multilingual is a whole person    who perceives nature as other humans do.
Exam alert

The faulty translations point about Chinese counterfactuals is the sharpest single criticism in this section — it says a famous Whorfian result was simply a methodological error. Use it.

Theory 4: Language shapes our cultural world view (topic 172)

The claim: learning a language determines or influences how we understand our culture and the world.

🔴 The FIVE inadequacies
1. Same language, yet different world views. A monolingual    English-speaking family where the mother is Buddhist, the father    Christian and the son Muslim — all view the world differently. 2. Different languages, yet similar world views. Communist    doctrine is shared by speakers of Korean, Chinese, Vietnamese    and Cuban Spanish. 3. Same language, but world view changes over time. Changes in    world view occur without changes in language — driven instead    by the spread of new ideas, economic domination, wars. 4. One language can describe many different world views. The Bible    of the ancient Hebrews: even with perfect translation, every    language's words carry different primary and secondary    meanings, implications, presuppositions, feelings, attitudes and    politeness — yielding many world views from one text. 5. Multilingual's world view. The theory predicts as many world    views as languages. Again not true — a multilingual is a    whole person.
Memory trick

The multilingual-as-whole-person argument appears as an inadequacy of Theories 2, 3 and 4. If you remember one counter-argument, remember that one — it does triple duty.

Erroneous beliefs underlying all four theories (topic 173)

The three shared errors
Belief 1: 'Their analysis of language is adequate.'   The most serious deficiency in Whorf, Sapir, Korzybski, Skinner and   von Humboldt: assuming the directly observable words or sentence   structure represent ALL the semantic or thought elements.   They drew conclusions from what linguists today would call a   superficial SURFACE STRUCTURE analysis. Belief 2: 'The meaning of words is linguistic in origin.'   Except for onomatopoeia, the word–meaning relationship is   conventional and arbitrary. There is no reason a dog is called   'dog' and not 'pen'. Hearing an obscure word like 'tantivy' for the   first time tells you nothing — meaning must be learned. Belief 3: 'There are primitive languages and primitive intelligence.'   Modern linguistic research has never found a single language that   could be called primitive. Chomsky (1967a): all languages are of   similar complexity, with similar basic forms and operations.

Deaf children is an inadequacy of Theory 2 (language essential for thought), not Theory 1 (speech essential). The theories are numbered and their objections are numbered — keep them in their own lists.

Disorders of syntax (topic 187)

Syntactic deficits are common in language disorders and have always been at the focus of research. Interest first focused on Broca's aphasia — an acquired disorder caused by strokes affecting left frontal brain regions.

Aphasia — the formal definition (topic 188)

An acquired language disorder subsequent to brain damage in the left hemisphere, characterised by diminished abilities to produce and understand both spoken and written language, compared with the speaker's presumed ability before the damage.
What determines type and severity

Non-progressive vs progressive aphasia
Non-progressive

Most common cause: a cerebral vascular accident (CVA) — a stroke.

Also traumatic head injury: road accidents, gunshot wounds.

Does not get worse over time.

Progressive

Arises from brain tumour, some infections, or progressive conditions such as Alzheimer's disease.

The language disturbance increases as the disease progresses.

Primary progressive aphasia — Mesulam's (2001) criteria

Reading and writing disorders (topic 189)

Reading disorders occur when a person has trouble with any part of the reading process. Reading and language-based learning disabilities are commonly called dyslexia. They are present from a young age and usually result from specific differences in the way the brain processes language.

Dyslexia — general definition (topic 191)

A brain-based learning disability that specifically impairs a person's ability to read. Individuals typically read at levels significantly lower than expected despite having NORMAL INTELLIGENCE. Can be inherited; genes predisposing to it have been identified.
Three common characteristics
1. Word decoding — difficulty sounding out written words;    matching letters to sounds in order to read a word. 2. Lack of fluency — difficulty reading quickly, accurately, and    with proper expression. 3. Poor reading comprehension — trouble understanding what    they read. Competence

One's underlying knowledge of a system, event or fact.

It is the non-observable ability to do or perform something.

Performance

The overtly observable and concrete manifestation or realization of competence.

The actual doing: walking, singing, dancing, speaking.

Common mistake

The myth the handouts explicitly call out. Some foreign language teaching materials claim:

  • comprehension (listening, reading) = competence
  • production (speaking, writing) = performance

This is not the case. Production is more directly observable, but comprehension is as much performance as production is — a 'wilful act', to use Saussure's term. Both comprehension and production can be aspects of both competence and performance.

/nature or nurture/
The nativist contention: a child is born with an innate knowledge of or predisposition toward language, and this innate property (the LAD or UG) is universal in all human beings.

Why the innateness hypothesis was needed: it resolved a contradiction. The behavioural view says language is a set of habits acquired by conditioning — but conditioning is much too slow and inefficient to account for acquiring something as complex as language.

The comparison problem (topic 199)

Common mistake

If asked 'do children learn second languages better than adults?', do not simply answer yes. The handouts' position is: children have a genuine advantage in PRONUNCIATION only; everything else is explained by different processing, different proficiency standards, and different methods. Say that and you have the top answer.

Attitude (topic 205)

A negative attitude towards the target language, its speakers, or other class members may affect determination and persistence. The same negative attitude could impair memory functioning and detract from focusing on the target language. (Gardner & Lambert 1972; Oller et al. 1977, 1978; Chihara & Oller 1978; Gardner 1985.)

Common mistake

But add the caution. Singleton and Ryan (2004, pp. 156–159) raise objections to connecting Piagetian stages with critical period arguments — 'not the least of which was the vagueness and lack of empirical support'. Including this caveat is what separates a good answer from a top one.

The process whereby the rules and structures of a second language are EXPLAINED to a learner, in the learner's first language. The learner is then expected to understand, learn and apply the rule in L2.
Common mistake

Why a language cannot be learned entirely by explication: although parts can be, it is impossible for the whole language, because not all of the rules of any one language have been discovered and written down. You cannot explain what nobody knows yet.

/induction/
Learning rules by self-discovery. The child exposed to L2 speech, who remembers what was heard, analyses it and discovers the underlying generalization or rule. Note: the learner must not only devise the rule but also figure out how it applies in other cases.
/memory/
Vocabulary learning and rote memory are crucial. A person with severe memory impairment could never learn their native language, much less a second. Even the simplest word requires memory — learning 'dog' means retaining a connection between the sound and the experience of seeing, touching or smelling a dog. That connection is arbitrary; there is no logical relationship between the sound and the meaning.

Language learning strategies as a preview (topic 213)

A conscious process where learning a language other than the L1 takes place. Often confused with bilingualism and multilingualism — the difference is that it must occur after the first language has already been acquired. It can also refer to a third, fourth or fifth language.

Styles are determined by how people internalize their total environment — and since that process is not strictly cognitive, the physical, affective and cognitive domains MERGE in learning styles. ⚠️ Some claim styles are stable traits in adults. The human being is a social animal, and the chief mechanism for maintaining the bonds of society is language. Some approaches to language teaching fail to achieve communicativity by overlooking the social nature of language — or by oversimplifying it, failing to recognise the complexity of the language–society relation.

Extroversion (topic 240)

Common mistake

The terms are often misunderstood because of a tendency to stereotype extroversion.

  • We picture the extrovert as a gregarious, 'life of the party' person.
  • We picture the introvert as quiet and reserved, tending toward reclusiveness.

Western society values the stereotypical extrovert — and nowhere is this more evident than in the classroom. That bias is the point the handouts are making. Do not assume extroverts are better language learners.

Why culture exists at all
No society exists without a culture — which reflects the need for culture to fulfill certain biological and psychological needs. Every day we face a 'bewildering host of confusing and contradictory facts, propositions and ideas'. Some organization of these facts is necessary to provide order to potential chaos. ⟹ Conceptual networks of reality evolve within a group of people    to provide that organization. Culture establishes for each person a context of cognitive and affective behavior — a template for personal and social existence.
Exam alert

The crucial critical point: we perceive reality within the context of our own culture — a reality that we have 'created', and therefore not necessarily a reality that is empirically defined.

The quotation to use: the meaningful universe in which each human being exists is not a universal reality, but 'a category of reality' consisting of selectively organized features considered significant by the society in which he lives.

Stereotypes or generalizations (topic 248)

Second culture acquisition & social distance (topic 249)

Robinson Stuart and Nocon: language learners undergo culture learning as 'a process — a way of perceiving, interpreting, feeling, being in the world, and relating to where one is and who one meets'. It is a process of creating SHARED MEANING between cultural representatives. It is experiential, continues over years, and penetrates deeply into one's patterns of thinking, feeling and acting.

STAGE 1 — Excitement and euphoria   A period of excitement over the newness of the surroundings. Language politics

The way language and linguistic differences between peoples are dealt with in the POLITICAL ARENA.

Manifests as government recognition and how language is treated in official capacities.

Examples: the legal status of a language as official in a country or state — meaning official documents are published in it but not in others; and the treatment of evidence in a court of law.

Language policy

A deliberate policy designed to favour or discourage the use of a particular language or set of languages.

Historically: nations used policy most often to promote ONE official language at the expense of others.

Now: many countries have policies designed to protect and promote regional and ethnic languages whose viability is threatened.

World Englishes (topic 251)

This is directly relevant to your own situation as a Pakistani learner of English — and examiners like answers that make that connection. Pakistani English is a world English in exactly Kachru's sense.

ESL and EFL (topic 252)

The traditional distinction — and why it has blurred
ESL — English as a Second Language

Learning English WITHIN a culture where English is spoken natively.

Clear case: an Arabic speaker learning English in the United States or the United Kingdom.

EFL — English as a Foreign Language

Learning English outside such a culture.

The blurring: the spread of EIL has 'muddied the formerly clear waters'. The distinction is not easily identified where English is already an accepted and widely used language for education and government — even though it is not spoken natively.

Common mistake

Pakistan is exactly the hard case. English is widely used in education and government, but it is not a native language. That is precisely why the handouts say the ESL/EFL line has become difficult to draw.

Generalizations become stereotypes when:

When ALL members are categorized identically. The 'all' is the operative word — a generalization allows exceptions, a stereotype does not.

🔴 The two ironies — this is what the topic is really about.

  1. Mirror neurons were first discovered in the MONKEY brain — yet monkeys are generally not credited with theory of mind, metaphor, language, or autism.
  2. Their role in imitation is contentious. Mirror neurons have never been recorded directly in humans; brain-imaging only points to an equivalent system, activated when people imitate action (Nishitani & Hari 2000, 2002; Rizzolatti & Craighero 2004). Yet monkeys appear incapable of imitation (Visalberghi & Fragaszy 1990, 2002) — suggesting the mirror system did not evolve to mediate imitation.

If asked about mirror neurons, the marks are in the scepticism, not the hype.

What actually happens inside a bilingual's head? Are the two languages stored separately or together? How does the brain know which one to use? And are they ever both switched off?

The short answer to the last question: no. Even in a supposedly monolingual setting, the other language keeps playing a role.

The structure of the bilingual lexicon (topic 260)

The basic process is the SAME as with monolinguals. Bilingual children tend to learn the languages as two monolinguals.

Socio-psychological factors in language processing (topic 264)

The closing argument of this whole block, and a genuinely good one: it is tempting to view the language production system as a pure language-producing machine — but that is far too simple.

Why processing is not socially neutral
Lexical access, grammatical complexity, and phonological encoding do NOT take place in a socio-psychological vacuum. Critical factors at all stages of production and perception:   • status   • self-esteem   • self-consciousness The worked example the handouts give: When a specific word is needed in speaking, there is a process of matching the meaning components of a lexical item with the communicative intention it is meant to express. In that matching there is an EVALUATIVE MOMENT with many factors in play:   • Is this word appropriate or good enough for this situation?   • Am I using the right level of politeness?   • If I cannot use this word, should I continue or stop? There is no absolute or mechanistic device that can make that decision for all words.
Common mistake

The necessary qualification: not every single word is weighed this way in speaking — that would cause too much loss of speed. How these socially-motivated mechanisms operate is far from clear, but understanding them is vital for understanding language use in language learners specifically.

In a sound-based system, each symbol represents a speech sound — either a phoneme or a syllable. Common mistake

The complication with Japanese, which the handouts flag: Japanese also mixes Chinese-type characters (kanji) into its writing system — even though those characters could be written in the syllabic Kana forms.

The evidence and the caution
Cave paintings: thousands of years ago humans drew animals and hunters on cave walls — Lascaux, France. These seem to have been pictograms. ⚠️ The caution: it is NOT KNOWN what the pictograms of the Cro-Magnon or other ancient groups were used for. But it is certain they depicted ideas or events and were NOT a way of symbolizing the SOUNDS of any language. What reading IS: a process that converts written forms → SPEECH forms → then meaning.

The essence of reading is the ability to DECODE reading materials into speech. Once speech is obtained, meaning will follow.

Method: early and systematic phonics instruction, starting with mastery of a set of letters and sounds that comprise words.

WHOLE-WORD approach

What reading IS: teaching should focus on MEANING and COMMUNICATION, not on speech.

The essential task is the RECOVERY OF MEANING. Whether a reader can say or write the words is INCIDENTAL to the reading process.

Reading is a form of communication whose goal is the reception of information through written forms.

⭐ The point that settles the argument
Fluent readers use a whole-word strategy. ALL fluent English readers eventually learn to identify whole words as if they were CHINESE CHARACTERS. ⭐ Even the proponents of the Phonics/Decoding Approach ADMIT this    (see Byrne 1992; Adams 1994). The evidence: the time taken to read a page ALOUD is much LONGER than when the same page is read SILENTLY — showing silent reading does not go through speech.

Exam tactics

  1. Do the objective questions first. They are most of the marks and the fastest.
  2. For 'define X', give the definition and one example. The example is often a separate mark.
  3. For 'discuss/evaluate', always end with the criticism — the handouts criticise almost every theory they present, and examiners expect you to.
  4. Name the researcher whenever you can. Attribution is cheap marks.
  5. If a question asks about a numbered list, write the list. Do not write a paragraph.
  6. Where a distinction exists (Broca/Wernicke, instrumental/integrative), define BOTH sides even if only one is asked about — it shows you know the contrast.
  7. Never say a theory is simply 'true' or 'proven'. The safest formula in this subject: the pattern is real, the explanation is contested.
